5 Small Dog Breeds For Prospective Owners

By Jim Silverstein

Despite what you may have been told you don't always need a huge space if you'd like to own a dog. There are many small dog breeds which will be just at home in an apartment. Of course there are many benefits to owning one such as costing less to take care of and needing less exercise than their bigger cousins. Here are five breeds you will want to take note of.

Small fluffy dog breeds are always popular and the Lhasa Apso is one of them. You won't have to worry about vacuuming up dog hair when owning one since they don't shed. And different from many of the littler pet types they are very alert watchdogs. However you shouldn't expect them to be able to stop an intruder just alert you to their presence.

The Boston terrier is a favorite on just about every small dog breeds list. Their contrasting black and white coat can be stunning. And if you like pooches that have a face similar to that of the bulldog but are usually much healthier they are a great choice. Normally they do not exceed twenty five pounds in weight.

Undoubtedly the Jack Russell terrier is one of the best small dog breeds for very active people. Jack Russells have what seems like never-ending energy so they do need an outlet for it daily. They do usually have quite long lifespans so you will be able to spend as much time as possible with your little companion.

Only one canine is recognizable by its little legs but long body, the dachshund. Its unique look sometimes means it is referred to as looking like a hot dog by onlookers. This shape is no accident of course, as it was bred to be able to hunt in the burrows of pests.

If you like the look of the bull terrier you may want to consider the smaller variety: the miniature bull terrier. They have the same personality traits as the larger type just in a smaller package. These are not usually recommend for first time dog owners since they are typically quite stubborn and need a strong leader. With one of these you will also need to be prepared for long daily walks.

Every one of the small dog breeds we've mentioned is special in a different way. Even if you've already fallen in love with one of them, it's always smart to take some time and think about what you truly want and what type of pet would work best with your situation first. And remember these are just a taste of what's out there, there are many more to pick from.
