Information On Bulldog Puppies For Sale In Missouri

By Jose Hall

The Roman Empire is believed to be the origin of the bulldogs. The Romans used it in bullbaiting. Bullbaiting is a bloody sport that involves fighting dogs in a cage. Dogs sustained serious injuries or died in the sport. The dogs were also used for driving cattle to markets for bullbaiting. The fall of the Roman Empire led to the abandonment of bullbaiting and bulldogs started to become more of companion pets.

Today, bulldogs have become gentle companions for human beings. They are reared in the house as well as in outdoor conditions. They have become increasingly popular in the US, the UK and several other western countries. Popularity in eastern countries is not very high but it is growing gradually. When one is considering bulldog puppies for sale in Missouri, they should first understand the basic facts about the breed. One can be better prepared to offer the needed care if they understand the dog first before they acquire it.

These dogs are usually very short, rising to a height of between 12 to 15 inches from the ground at the shoulders. The lack of height is usually compensated by having a great girth and a muscular body. When the males are fully mature, they weight around fifty pounds while the females attain the weight of 40 pounds. Dogs that are used in shows may weigh ten pounds more than those that are not.

The heads are broad while cheeks extend to the sides of eyes. The faces are densely wrinkled, particularly around the foreheads. Lower lips are undershot while upper ones are droopy. This makes the lower teeth to stick out. They have strong and massive jaws. The jaws are massively built to allow latching onto opponents when in a fight.

Bulldogs are sweet and sociable, but are very courageous. The great courage makes the breed a perfect watchdog. It has a friendly and easygoing personality. They are good with people, even strangers. It is rare to find a bulldog barking. However, the stare in their eyes coupled with the mere appearance and size frightens intruders away.

The temperament of individual dogs is dependent on several factors, which include socialization, heredity, and training. In nature, puppies are filled with curiosity and playfulness. People can touch and hold them without trouble. It is good to try and understand the individual puppies by spending time with them so as to learn their character. The puppy chosen should not be timid and withdrawn, but it should also not be aggressive to its littermates.

Certain health problems are a major concern among bulldogs. Although not all bulldogs are affected by the health problems, one should be aware of their existence. Before one visits a breeder to discuss the dog, they should conduct their own research concerning the breed. This places them in a better position to ask questions and know which answers to expect.

One should ensure that the puppies are only taken when they are old enough after they have socialized enough with littermates and have been nursed by the mother. It is important to obtain the documentation and clearance showing the certain health conditions are not in the dogs. One should inspect the parents too.
