Could Exotic Shorthair Kittens Make Good Pets For You?

By Henry Young

Cat lovers will argue that feline pets are preferable to their canine counterparts because cats are more self-sufficient, independent, and don't require walking every day. Among cat lovers, some swear by the long haired variety, and others will have only short haired animals. Individuals who are attracted to the look of Persians, but are concerned these cats are too difficult to maintain, might be interested in some of the exotic shorthair kittens that are so popular today.

Exotics, as they are known, are the result of various pairings of Russian Blues, Burmese, American Shorthairs, and Persians. The final result, which seems to have been fairly accidental, is a cat that looks just like a Persian, but has short hair. The Cat Fancier's Association accepts them as a genuine breed.

Exotics do not vocalize much, but they tend to be playful, gentle, and friendly. The felines enjoy batting toys and the company of their owners. They do not require constant attention however. Exotics are content to spend time napping and eating when they are left alone. These are good pets for families with multiple animals, as long as those animals are not aggressive. Exotics also tolerate children quite well.

Because of their flattened facial features there are certain conditions many fall victim to. Breathing difficulty, poor jaw alignment, and tearing are common ailments. Ringworm and diseases of their kidneys can become problems for them. Exotics are also prone to a skin condition that causes redness, discomfort, and hair loss. Regular visits to the vet can often prevent problems from becoming severe.

Although their fur is much shorter than the Persians, these cats need regular brushing and combing to keep their coats healthy. A monthly bath is a good idea and regular teeth brushing is necessary to avoid gum disease. If cats get used to having their teeth brushed at an early age, it is not difficult to make this a regular part of their routine. Exotics normally do not do very well as outside cats. They are not particularly adept at defending themselves and should be kept inside at all times, especially if they have been declawed.

Round is probably the word that describes these felines best. They have round, sturdy bodies topped by full, rounded heads. Their legs are thick and short. There is a variation of a traditional Exotic most people refer to as extreme Exotic. These are typically show cats with excessively flattened faces. This feature can make it difficult to breath, so they tend not to exert themselves. The traditional faces, being fuller, allow for more natural and easier breathing.

Exotics come in several colors. If they are white, their eyes will be copper or bright blue. Some of the white coated felines have an eye of each color. Interested buyers will not find true blue eyed Exotics with any other coat color. All of the rest have copper eyes.

Most cats are easy to live with and a lot of fun to be around when they aren't napping or eating. They can be good company and devoted companions. Cat lovers everywhere prefer them to any other pet.
