Guides In Purchasing From American Bulldog Breeders

By Brenda Graham

American bulldogs are a breed of working dogs that are protective, loyal, energetic and confident. They have a strong will and its trainer should invest time in establishing a dominant role between them. They are excellent family dogs and can be friendly to anyone including other dogs and cat if socialized properly.

Purchasing one to be a pet of yours is a decision that must not be taken lightly and a proper study about the breed should be done. The American bulldog breeders would be able to provide you with any information and the best puppy they have. Here are some guides in where to purchase and what to do in order to raise them properly.

Avoid buying from puppy mills which are places that are breeding puppies with thinking of the health and living quality. American bulldogs are prone to specific health conditions but if bred properly, the chances of these conditions from passing down and being inherited is lowered. Dogs that are inbred have more chances of inheriting these genetic health conditions so inspect if the puppy is a byproduct of this or not.

Pet stores are another place that is not ideal to acquire puppies from because of their tendency of getting their supplies from the puppy mills. Pet stores will never admit to the allegation but will insist instead that a reputable breeder is their provider. Inquire about the breeder by getting the address and name in order to verify the truthfulness of what they said.

Backyard breeders are those that have very little knowledge in breeding the optimal dog and in preventing genetic conditions to pass down. They are not good in training and rarely have their dogs check for health conditions. A large quantity of puppies are always available and they do not seem to run out of them indicating that they do not control when their dogs mate. Avoid this kind of breeders at all cost.

Meanwhile, hobby breeder are very careful in choosing which dog to breed and are familiar with it including all its needs. They are normally registered to organizations and they make certain that their puppies are in good health before selling them. The new owners will also be interviewed by them in order to get to know and determine the capabilities they have in raising the puppy they chose.

Socialize your bulldog with others while it is still young to avoid unwanted behaviors from developing such as biting. Let them take as much time as possible to get familiar with different things and do not rush them on it. Keep them on a leash when introducing to new people and pets to avoid any accidents that may happen.

Train them early about obedience and take the time to make them feel and know that the dominant one in your relationship is you. Use voice and hand commands in training them and keep the consistency so they will not be confused. Regularly changing them will give them a hard time in following your orders. Hand commands are useful in conditions that hearing you may be impossible.

Let them have regular exercises because they are an energetic and athletic breed that have even temperament when allowed to exercise. Give them rest breaks during exercises to let them catch their breath. Their facial structure makes if difficult for them to properly breathe. Be careful when you play with them as they tend to get rough and use their strength.
