This breed of course is one that originates from England. It was however, originally bred from an Asian mastiff line to enable it to fight in the arena with bulls. Thus since it was breed for this purpose it had inherited the name bulldog. The sport that it was bred for was outlawed in the 19th century, but the breed remained. The modern day bulldog that we are all familiar with today exhibits a much different temperament altogether when compared to its predecessors.

Ironically, even though this breed has been bred to perform in a violent sport, the bulldog of today, despite its mean looks is known to be also one of the gentlest dog breeds. It is quite good with children, being very affectionate with them while at the same time being a dependable watchdog and guard dog. It is a dog that requires a strong owner who can assert his or her primacy or else this dog will lord it over everyone. It is a risk to place them with other dogs as they still have a somewhat combative nature. This is because they always want to be the alpha male in any group situation.

Small spaces pose no problem for this breed and can be considered as a very well adjusted indoor dog. They do not need large yards to frolic in, but they should be taken for daily walks to stave off their innate instinct to migrate. This is a dog that has no problems with long periods of inactivity.

An English bulldog is really made for temperate climates. This is because it has a hard time regulating its temperature in extreme temperatures. Thus it cannot live in very hot tropical climates or in climates that are very cold.

The breed can have a plethora of medical problems in the long run, and you must be prepared to face up to this eventuality. In time, as they age, they will develop poor eyesight and also become prone to flatulence, although this latter condition is also very much present in those of a younger age. They do also develop their fair share of skin problems and infections, as well as hip and knee problems.

This breed however is easy to groom. This is because of its short and fine fur coupled with its average shedding. It is a good practice to always clean its face, especially between the wrinkles. This face cleaning should be done at least once a day.
